Gyo-O is a longstanding Japanese restaurant in Richmond offering seafood bowls, ramen, tempura, and more. Known for fresh ingredients, traditional preparation techniques, and thoughtfully composed dishes, the restaurant provides a satisfying dining experience in a welcoming setting. Here’s what I tried on my visit.

The Unagi on rice in a stone grill bowl is popular choice. It comes with a sashimi plate featuring salmon, scallop, and hamachi as well as a red tuna cube appetizer, an onsen egg, and a pot of bonito broth. Each element contributes to a balanced mix of textures and flavours.

The Ontama Tsukune features tender, housemade chicken meatballs with a soft-cooked egg, blending rich and delicate notes.

For something heartier, the Oden hot pot combines daikon, boiled egg, deep-fried tofu, mountain yam jelly, and fish tube, simmered in a light yet flavourful broth.

The Black Garlic Oil Ramen features a rich chicken-and-pork broth that is complemented by BBQ pork, a ramen egg, seaweed, and green onion.

Small plates like the housemade Ebi nira gyoza offer crisp bites with juicy, well-seasoned fillings, perfect for starting a meal or sharing.

The Ebi mayo, with golden fried tiger prawns in a creamy, tangy miso sauce, balances crunch and richness.

I also enjoyed the tuna akami, negitoro and chutoro.

Gyo-O Richmond is located at 3779 Sexsmith Rd #2137, Richmond, BC.
