La Taqueria Brentwood has introduced a new brunch menu that reflects Chef Maria Ponce’s approach to Mexican comfort dishes, drawing from familiar flavours while presenting them in a format suited for a relaxed daytime setting. The menu moves between savoury staples and satisfying handheld options, offering a mix of textures and sauces that feel grounded in tradition with some thoughtful updates.
What I Tried
Mexico City Quesadillas
These came as two cheese-filled quesadillas topped with tomatillo sauce, crema, queso fresco, sliced white onion, cilantro, and salsa macha. The tortillas had a slight crisp on the outside while staying soft within. I found the tomatillo sauce brought a gentle tang that balanced the richness of the cheese. I added chorizo and avocado, which gave the dish a more substantial feel and a bit of spice.
Barbacoa Sandwich
This was served on fresh sourdough with beef barbacoa, poblano mayo, brie cheese, caramelized onions, bell peppers, relish, and mixed greens. It came with smashed potatoes finished with green onions and parmesan, along with a side of birria broth. The sandwich itself felt hearty, with the barbacoa tender and well-seasoned. The poblano mayo added a mild heat, while the brie introduced a creamy element that softened the overall profile. I appreciated dipping pieces into the birria broth, which added warmth and moisture. The potatoes had crisp edges and a soft interior, making them easy to snack on between bites.
Burrito Ranchero
This burrito was filled with chorizo, three eggs, salsa morita, refried beans, and cheese, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla. It was filling without feeling overwhelming, and the eggs gave it a soft, comforting texture. The salsa morita brought a smoky note that carried through each bite. I ended up taking half of this home, and it held up well later in the day.
Jamaica and Orange Juice
We washed it all down with some Jamaica and Orange Juice.
Overall, the brunch menu felt approachable and satisfying, with dishes that worked well for a casual outing. I could see this being a spot to return to when I want something familiar with a bit of variety on the table.
