Happy Hour at Okini Restaurant & Bar offers a more casual way to experience the kitchen and bar, while still reflecting the same thoughtful approach found on their regular menu. Located in Kerrisdale, Okini is chef-owned and operated by Chef Kevin Lin and his partner Steph Wan. Together, they bring their Asian Canadian background and international experience into a West Coast Japanese framework that feels personal and well-considered.
During this visit, we focused on the Happy Hour offerings, which focus on small plates that are easy to share and straightforward to enjoy.
The Unagi Tempura arrived crisp and light, served on a shiso leaf and finished with black tobiko. The texture stayed intact, and the tobiko added a subtle pop of salinity.

The Fried Scallop, panko breaded and served with sweet chili mayo, was evenly cooked and satisfying, with a gentle sweetness from the sauce.

We also tried the Sunseeker Oysters, which were fresh and briny with a clean finish, served simply and without distraction.

The Tobi Fries, seasoned with nori salt and served with tobiko mayo, were crisp and well seasoned, making them an easy table snack.

From the warmer dishes, the Campanelle Alla Vodka stood out as comforting and familiar, with ruffled pasta coated in a tomato cream sauce accented by onion and garlic confit.

The Sablefish Collars, deep fried and finished with a hibachi-style ginger sauce, were rich and flavourful, with the sauce adding warmth without overpowering the fish.

Since it was spot prawn season, Chef Kevin sent over his unique creation, Spot Prawn Poutine.

For drinks, the Yuzu Ginger Spritz was refreshing and lightly aromatic, made with muddled ginger, yuzu juice, and ginger ale.

The Aperol Spritz offered a classic option for those looking for something easygoing to sip alongside the food.

Beyond Happy Hour, Okini’s regular menu is also worth noting for its illustrated design. The playful drawings closely resemble the dishes themselves, adding a charming and personal touch to the overall experience.
Okini Restaurant & Bar remains a place that feels comfortable for a casual visit, while still offering enough care and detail to make each return feel worthwhile.
