Amarillo Steak Sticks is a new family-run ghost kitchen serving Texas-inspired comfort food in Vancouver.
Mutual friends introduced me to husband-and-wife owners Ali and Behnoush, who live in my neighbourhood. Both grew up around cooking, spending time in the kitchen and watching their mothers make food for their families.
Ali has spent much of his career in education and assessment, and Behnoush is a cake decorator. They had always enjoyed cooking and feeding people, but only recently had the opportunity to start a food business.
The idea followed a stop in Amarillo, Texas, where they visited the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Ali had also been reading about the founders of In-N-Out Burger and Raising Cane’s and was interested in how they built their businesses around simple menus.
Amarillo Steak Sticks takes a similar approach. Their main dish is a serving of breaded steak sticks with a butter biscuit and campfire corn.
The steak comes cut into strips with a crisp breaded coating with biscuit and corn rounding out the meal.
They also make an iced hibiscus tea with lemon juice and a little sweetness. It is floral, lightly tart and refreshing with the fried food.
You can find Amarillo Steak Sticks on Uber Eats and Door Dash from Sunday and Tuesday to Friday, 11 am to 2 pm.
