DoorDash Unveils What and How Canadians Have Been Ordering Online

DoorDash, in partnership with Restaurants Canada, released the 2022 Restaurant Online Ordering Trends Report. The restaurant industry has dramatically changed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and food delivery and pickup continues to experience massive growth worldwide, including in Canada, with 27% year over year growth in same-store orders. In light of the changing foodservice industry and growing importance of delivery and pickup options, the report provides restaurants with key insights on Canadian delivery, pickup and online ordering consumer trends.

2022 Restaurant Online Ordering Trends Report

The report surveyed 1,509 Canadians to review their eating habits and its impact on the future of delivery and online ordering.

Report Highlights:  

  • Canadians aren’t shying away from the comfort of baked goods: Bakery was the most popular cuisine ordered on DoorDash in 2021.  Vancouver, Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto consumers are ordering baked goods from the comfort of their homes.
  • Breakfast and brunch orders were on the rise with a 3 x increase in orders between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the DoorDash app.
  • Canadians continue to enjoy eating from the comfort of their own home, as 83% per cent of Canadians are ordering delivery as much or more than in 2021.
  • New experiences are leading customer satisfaction: In Q1 2022, almost half of Canadian consumers tried a new merchant on DoorDash (compared to the merchants they ordered from in Q4 2021).
  • Convenience of online ordering continues to be on the rise: DoorDash saw a 27% increase in same-store delivery and pickup orders on the platform in Canada comparing Q1’22 to Q1’21.
  • Delivery is here to stay: 48% of customers prefer to order delivery through a third-party website or app.
  • #Comfort Saturdays: Friday night at 6 p.m. is the most popular time and day Canadians order delivery through DoorDash.
