Family Fishing Coquitlam Spring Events May 29 & June 19

Gone fishing! That’s what you’ll tell everyone as you head to the lake to catch a family fishing event in Coquitlam this Spring. Festival Coquitlam is pleased to announce two great Family Fishing Coquitlam events are returning this year: the Como Lake Family Fishing Derby on May 29 and the Family Fishing Day at Lake Lafarge on June 19.

Family Fishing Coquitlam

Como Lake Family Fishing Derby
Sunday, May 29, 2022; 6 am – 12 pm

A free event for youth under 16 years of age, the Como Lake Fishing Derby has prize giveaways and a pancake breakfast available for a nominal charge. The event is hosted by the Festival Coquitlam Society, the Kin Club of Coquitlam (Kinsmen) and the Port Coquitlam & District Hunting and Fishing Club. Prizes are awarded each year for a variety of catches from the largest and smallest fish to the strangest catch of the day. The fishing derby attracts hundreds of children each year. As the children fish, parents are welcome to enjoy a pancake breakfast cooked by the Kin Club. Remember to bring your own fishing pole and bait.

Family Fishing Day
Sunday, June 19, 2022; 12 pm – 5 pm
Visit Lafarge Lake for a free family-friendly day of fishy fun and prizes during BC’s free fishing weekend – when anglers can fish BC’s waters without a license. Experts will be on site to teach participants new techniques on catching rainbow trout. Other activities include fly tying, casting lessons and salmon raffle. The Kin Club of Coquitlam (Kinsmen) will be on hand for the Family Free Fishing Day cooking up some great food for the families to enjoy at a nominal fee  Some fantastic prizes will be given away at the end of the event even if it’s your first time baiting a hook and casting a line.

What to Bring:
The kids will fall hook, line and sinker for a great day of fishing at the lake for these events. Here’s what you’ll need for a successful event:

  • Basic fishing gear: rod and reel, fishing line, hook, bobber, weight, bait or flies
  • Appropriate clothing: hat and sunscreen for a hot day on the water or rain gear for a wet one.
  • Snacks and drinks (think litterless options and take home your waste and recycling).
  • Lawn chair or two (optional)
  • Note: A freshwater fishing license is not required for kids under age 16 in BC and is therefore not needed for these events but if the family gets hooked on fishing you’ll need to look into it.

Sneak Peak:
Save the date. Festival Coquitlam’s Teddy Bear Picnic is also back this year on June 12 with a fun, live, in person family concert for the whole family. Stay tuned!
