B&D Authentic Viet Cuisine in Burnaby serves Southern Vietnamese dishes in a casual dining space on Kingsway. The menu includes familiar comfort dishes such as phở alongside regional-style plates, grilled meats, seafood, rice dishes, and drinks with Vietnamese flavours.
I visited to try some of their new summer dishes. The meal moved from cool drinks and fresh salad to noodle soup, grilled chicken, prawns, fried rice, and dessert.
The Tenderloin Shaken Beef was one of the more filling plates, with pan-fried beef, yellow rice, fried eggs, and a fresh salad on the side. The beef was tender and savoury, while the rice and egg made the dish feel generous.
The Honey Chicken With Pandan Sticky Rice featured grilled half chicken with a honey-chilli glaze and pandan sticky rice. The chicken had a lightly sweet flavour with a mild chilli note. I especially liked the pandan sticky rice, which added a soft aroma.
The Butterfly Prawn With Salted Egg Yolk Sauce came with grilled prawns and salted egg yolk sauce. This was one of the richer seafood dishes from the meal, with firm prawns and a savoury, creamy finish.
The Pomelo Salad had pomelo, shrimp, herbs, crispy shallots, and shrimp chips. It was bright and juicy, and I liked having it between the grilled and fried dishes.
The Crab Fried Rice came with crab, prawn, vegetables, and chilli green sauce. The rice had a satisfying wok-fried flavour, with seafood throughout and a sharper note from the sauce.
The classic B&D Special Pho was a comforting bowl with 18-hour beef broth, rare beef, flank, tripe, tendon, and beef balls. The broth was savoury and steady, and the different beef cuts gave the bowl good variety.
For drinks, the Coco Pandan had coconut, pandan, and mung beans in a smooth, lightly fragrant drink. The Vietnamese Coffee With Condensed Milk was rich and familiar, while the Virgin Mojito brought a refreshing mint and lime flavour.
To finish, the Coffee Ice Cream brought the meal back to Vietnamese coffee flavours in dessert form. It was a simple ending, but it made sense after the condensed milk coffee earlier in the meal.
Overall, B&D Authentic Viet Cuisine’s summer dishes offered comfort, seafood, grilled meats, fresh flavours, and refreshing drinks in a relaxed Burnaby setting. The menu had enough variety for sharing, and the dishes I tried gave a good look at their range.
