Chancho Tortilleria Reopening on Commercial Drive

The doors reopen this afternoon to Vancouver’s popular Chancho Tortilleria, and fans of its award-winning, authentic Mexican cuisine could not be more excited.

After building a loyal following over five years in Yaletown, Chancho is ready to welcome guests to its new, larger home at 2096 Commercial Drive, where they can expect the same mouth-watering menu along with some delicious additions.

In celebration of its new community, Chancho is hosting a soft open this weekend.

From April 14-17, guests will get an early taste of Chancho’s authentic, casual Mexican fare, and feel good knowing that $1 from every order will be donated to Kinbrace, a small East Vancouver charity that welcomes refugee claimants with safe housing, help with settlement, and a wrap-around community of support.

It all takes place in Chancho’s new space, previously the neighbourhood’s storied Cafe Deux Soleils.

Co-owners Ernesto Gomez and Darragh McFeely are thrilled to begin a new chapter in the legendary space known for its independent spirit, and for bringing people together.

The move to The Drive means Chancho can do what it does best . . . and a little more.

Starting with the interior, Chancho has once again teamed up with Scott Cohen to design the space and with artist Graham Landin to create new, colourful murals; to evoke a feeling customers will remember from the Davie St. location.

With 70 seats plus a front patio, the more expansive tortilleria and restaurant also mean more diners can sit down to enjoy the Chancho’s tortillas, freshly made on-site and skillfully crafted with non-GMO heirloom native corn sourced directly from farmers in Mexico.

The tender tortillas are then ready to be loaded with Chancho’s juicy carnitas or grilled fresh veggies, all prepared following traditional techniques.

Alongside these delicious, affordable homestyle Mexican eats, guests can sip from a boosted drinks menu featuring natural wines, Mezcals, and new cocktails, like Mezcal Jamaica (mezcal, hibiscus, lime) and Batanga (Raicilla, Mexican cola, salt).

Chancho Tortilleria will be open until 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Weekend features are offered from 11:30 a.m. every weekend.

With summer approaching, guests will soon be able to join Chancho later — extended operating hours are planned for the coming months.
