Vancouver Aquarium Opens New Amazing Axolotls Exhibit

Vancouver Aquarium has launched a new permanent gallery, Amazing Axolotls, expanding their existing axolotl display into a larger and more immersive experience for visitors. The new space introduces one of the world’s most distinctive amphibians, known for their feathery external gills, expressive features, and rare ability to regenerate parts of their bodies.

The Amazing Axolotls gallery features three habitats, including two dedicated axolotl environments and one for fish. All tanks are built at a similar height to allow clear viewing for children and adults alike. Interpretive panels explore the animal’s biology, cultural history, and conservation status, offering context on why this species has become a global symbol of both scientific interest and environmental concern.

Educational content in the gallery traces the axolotl’s origins to the waterways of the Valley of Mexico, where the species is now found in the wild only in Xochimilco, a fragile wetland system within Mexico City. The exhibit outlines the pressures facing this habitat, including urban development and water pollution, and explains current efforts to protect and restore these ecosystems.

An interactive photo feature, Smile Like An Axolotl, has been designed to encourage visitor engagement while reinforcing the animal’s recognizable appearance. The installation supports the aquarium’s broader mandate to combine learning with approachable, hands-on experiences.

The project also reflects international collaboration. Conservation messaging in the gallery highlights partnerships with Mexican institutions such as Acuarios Michin and emphasizes the shared responsibility of protecting species that are both culturally significant and critically endangered.

Located in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium continues to expand their role as a centre for public education, research, and wildlife protection. Alongside this new exhibit, the aquarium works closely with the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society, which operates Canada’s only dedicated marine mammal rescue facility and responds to hundreds of animal emergencies each year.
